Hospice Admission Guidelines
* Individual is diagnosed with a terminal illness and is given a prognosis of 6 months or less, should the disease follow its natural course
* Curative measures are no longer effective or the individual wants to discontinue these treatments
Beginning Hospice Services
A referral can be made by the patient, family, friend, or doctor. When the physician confirms the need for hospice services, a nurse will visit to explain the plan of care and to assess the patient’s needs. A social worker will assess the patient’s as well as the family’s needs. Services can usually begin immediately.
Paying for Hospice Services
Hospice services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance companies. For those patients who do not have insurance, the agency has funds received through community donations that will cover the cost of care.
